Music
At Exmouth Community College, we believe every student should have the opportunity to discover, enjoy and develop their musical potential. Music is taught by two specialist teachers who are active performers, supported by a growing team of visiting instrumental and vocal tutors. Through a practical, ambitious and inclusive curriculum, students develop their creativity, musicianship, confidence and independence.
We aim for all students to:
- Acquire performance techniques and develop musicianship;
- Develop creativity through composing and arranging music;
- Enjoy music through active participation and performance;
-
Understand how music reflects diverse cultures, traditions and historical contexts.
Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, students progressively develop their skills in performing, composing, listening, singing and notation. Music at Key Stage 3 is practical and creative, with students developing skills on keyboards, ukuleles, guitars, bass guitars, drums and percussion, alongside singing and ensemble performance. Students explore a rich variety of music, including orchestral music, Blues, Hip Hop, Reggae, music from around the world, film music and contemporary band performance.
Music technology is an important part of our curriculum. Students use Digital Audio Workstations to compose, record and refine their own music alongside developing their skills on traditional instruments. Our specialist facilities include two recording studios, Mac suites, DJ suite and dedicated practice spaces, giving students the opportunity to rehearse, compose, perform and produce music.
Students can continue their musical journey beyond Key Stage 3 through Eduqas GCSE Music and progress to Eduqas A Level Music in the Sixth Form. Both courses develop students as performers, composers and listeners and provide excellent preparation for further musical study and opportunities within music and the wider creative industries.
Beyond the classroom, students can take part in a vibrant programme of ensembles and clubs, including Concert Band, Livewire, Soundwave, DJ Club, Chamber Ensemble, Music Technology Club and Keyboard Club. These provide opportunities for students to make music together, develop new skills, form bands, sing, produce music and perform throughout the year.
Students can also access instrumental and vocal tuition with our visiting specialist teachers across strings, woodwind, voice, piano/keyboard, guitar, ukulele, bass guitar and percussion. Pupil Premium funding is used to support eligible students in accessing instrumental tuition, helping us to make music-making opportunities available to as many students as possible.
Performance is at the heart of musical life at Exmouth Community College. Students have opportunities to perform as soloists and in ensembles through concerts, showcases, productions and community events, as well as opportunities to experience live music beyond the classroom. Looking ahead, we aim to expand our instrumental provision, strengthen our links with the wider community and reintroduce an international performance tour.
We are committed to helping students grow not only as musicians, but as confident, creative and collaborative young people with a lifelong appreciation of music.
